The Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures (HLL) offers a wide range of courses in language, literature, film, culture, and language courses in Spanish and Portuguese. We offer a major in Spanish, and minors in Spanish, Hispanic Language and Culture (HLC), and Portuguese and Luso-Brazilian Culture. A major or minor in Spanish or Portuguese provides students with critical language and cultural understandings in today’s globalized world. Indeed, Spanish is the primary language in 20 countries and is the native language of about 486 million people; domestically, about 13.4% of individuals in the United States speaks Spanish. Moreover, Portuguese is the 5th most spoken language in the world with about 230 million native speakers.

Check out our exciting programs and course offerings on this site. We also sponsor a number of student clubs and activities as well as an excellent undergraduate research symposium.

As a majority-minority department, we are committed to fostering an equitable and inclusive environment that enables all individuals to go their best work. I encourage you to check out our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion statement to see how we embody these values in our courses and in our work.

Our offices are located on the 13th Floor of the Cathedral of Learning (1309). Please stop by, so we can discuss how a major or minor in our department can advance your academic career.
